Shakespeare lived from 1564 to 1616 and his career as a playwright in London spanned over twenty years. The chronology of his plays can reflect on what their author was going through as he wrote them, and therefore it is interesting to consider what topics interested Shakespeare as a young man, and then what thoughts dominated the aging playwright at the end of his career.
Childhood and Education
William Shakespeare was born in April 1564 in the market town of Stratford-upon-Avon, one hundred miles northwest of London. His birthday is traditionally marked as April 23rd, but his birthday is not recorded. He was christened on April 26, so his birthday must have been April 21-25. His father, John, was a prosperous glover and alderman in the town.
From about age seven William attended the local grammar school, called the King's New School, where he studied Latin. He probably spent ten years at school, though he might have left early when, in his teens, his father experienced financial difficulties.
